Feel tired and bloated after overindulging? Here’s a delicious detox tea recipe to get you back on a healthy track.
Did you over-indulge this festive season? You tried eating in moderation but the temptation weakened your will power. As a result, you have found yourself overstuffed, and bloated the next day. Don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world and you are not alone. I fully enjoyed my Christmas indulgences, and I have no regrets. But now, it’s time to detox and reset the system and I have got the perfect detox tea to get us all back on track.
The morning after overindulging, it is important to give your system a break. Therefore, start your day with warm lemon water and sip on it throughout the day. Eat more nourishing, plant-based food such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains , healthy fats and legumes and stay clear of processed foods and meat.
I would also recommend intermittent fasting for a day or two to reset your digestive system. You simply fast for about 16 hours a day and have an 8 hour eating window. For example, you stop eating at 8pm the day before and have your next meal at 12pm the following day. My detox tea will be the perfect go-to drink during the fast.
Warm lemon water has been my morning ritual for a long time. It alkalises the body, boosts metabolism and curbs cravings. I have been doing intermittent fasting for the last 6 weeks, and lemon water is what gets me through. I’ve been experimenting with adding new ingredients to my warm lemon water to enhance flavour and increase the health benefits. I’m excited to share this detox tea recipe. It has all my favourite ingredients; lemon, turmeric, ginger, green tea, apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper. It is anti inflammatory, detoxifies the body, aids in digestion and weight loss and boosts immunity.
Before I share the recipe with you, lets quickly go through the health benefits of the ingredients in this detox tea:
Lemon: Detoxifies the body, aids in digestion and weight loss. Boosts energy and mood and keeps your skin glowing. Also chock-full of Vitamin C.
Turmeric: A powerful anti-inflammatory, high in antioxidants. Turmeric supports the immune system to fight infection and relieve pain.
Ginger: This is my go-to for any tummy aches and discomfort. Ginger helps with indigestion, acid reflux, bloating, inflammation and gas.
Green tea: Helps with weight-loss, reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Kills bacteria and inhibits viruses which lowers the risk of infections. May also lower the risk of developing alzheimer’s.
Apple cider vinegar: Aids in weight-loss and digestion, lowers blood pressure and has pain relieving properties (I take shots of this whenever I feel a headache or stomachache coming on, and it goes away almost instantly).
Cayenne pepper: I love the spicy kick it adds to this detox tea. Cayenne pepper boosts immunity due to it’s high content of beta-carotene. It also helps with inflammation and weight loss.
- 1 Green tea bag
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger or 1/2 teaspoon ginger powder
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh turmeric or 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1-2 Tablespoon Apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Juice of half a lemon
- Brew the green tea using your preferred method.
- Add ginger and turmeric to the cup of tea whilst it's hot and let it cool for a few minutes (adding apple cider vinegar to hot liquids kills off its health benefits)
- Add the rest of the ingredients to the green tea, and mix well. You can strain out the ginger and turmeric, I don't bother I chew it all down.
- If the taste is too bitter for your liking, you sweeten it up with a dash of pineapple juice or a teaspoon of honey. Enjoy!
